Your Job Search Inspiration – Getting Your Great New Job.
Getting Your Great New Job is a five part series based on my experience coaching and helping my clients through their job searches and get great jobs. Jobs that they are excited about and feel great about, better jobs than they’d been trying for, jobs that are a big step forward on a path toward their chosen future… yes, even in this economy. You can have YOUR great job too! This is Part 1 – Your Inspiration. [See Article Introduction - Don’t Just Get a Job, Get a Great Job…YOUR Job.]
Your Inspiration – What Is A Great Job… YOUR Job!
What’s a “Great Job”? Well that depends on who you are. For each of us there is a job that we will really enjoy, a job that will bring out the best in us. I love what I do and there are a lot of people who really wouldn’t like it. So a great job is YOUR job.
It’s a job that uses your skills, abilities and talents. It also includes your values, interests and desires. It values and appreciates who and how you are, personally and professionally.
We all have different skills, talents and experiences. There are people we like to hang out with and fit in with, and people we don’t. We all have different things we like to do and things we don’t like to do. I believe we also want to make a difference. We want work that matters to us and that gives our life meaning and a sense of purpose.
Think about the job you want. What qualities does it have? What kind of people do you want to work with? What kinds of experiences would you like to have at work? Really dig in and think about it. The more clear and the more you know what you want the better.
Getting clear about what you want does two things. When we know what we want it’s easier to find it…think about going to the grocery store for a specific item versus going for something because you’re hungry. The first, you go in, get what you want and go. The second, especially if you’re really hungry, can feel frustrating, it can take a long time, and even when you get something you may not feel satisfied.
The other plus from thinking about what you want in your next job is that it gets you feeling positive about having a job, and maybe even excited to get it. If you really dig in and think about your possible new job, the new people you’re going to meet, the opportunities to learn and grow, maybe even the possibility of making a difference in the world through your work, that may get you excited about that new job and wanting it…not just needing it. Your motivation will go up and so will your energy for finding that new job.
Here’s some questions to get you thinking:
- What did you like most about your last job(s)?
- Which of your skills and talents do you really like to use?
- How could you benefit an organization or a team?
- What do people appreciate you for at work, or in life that you could use at work?
- What impresses you about different companies and why?
- What skills, talents and experiences do you have – from past work and beyond? What interests? What volunteer or hobby experience do you have? What do you have a passion for because it’s close to your heart and matters to you? This is much more than what you’ve done in past jobs…this is bringing all of you to your next job.
- What does it feel like at work when what you do and who you are is really valued? What have people said to you and about you that felt great?
To get your self more upbeat when looking for a job think about some of these. Make a list or lists. What we usually do is focus on our need of a job, which puts so much pressure on us. Yes, you do need a job and you will find it faster if your looking for something you really want. Don’t limit your future by only going for what you had in the past. Go for what you want… it may take work, you may have to stretch and take some risks but it will be so worth it.
- One thing to remember… you only need one job. You’re not looking for 20 jobs, just one.
If you went for the job you really wanted, not just what you had in the past, but what you really want… what would it be or what would it include? You deserve to have work that you love, work that builds your spirit. That can be anything for you.
We all have dreams. Usually those dreams have to do with doing something original (art, music, writing, leading a new way, etc.) or making a difference in the world socially, environmentally, or spiritually. What about you? What are your dreams? What do you really want to do?
Often times we think we have to settle or go way out on a limb. What I’ve found is there are stepping stones or ways to bring the pieces together. If you have project management experience and love boats, in what kind of jobs could you have both? What if you’re an executive but burned out because it was all about making money and you want more from your work… you could use your experience, power, and connections in an area of business/industry that you’re passionate about and gives your life meaning. If you’re an administrative professional or have sales experience, or whatever skills where could you use those skills that would excite you, what kind of company or industry? And that is also how you make a transition that bridges your skills to your passions. And besides, if you go for what you’re passionate about, you are much more apt to get the job.
Don’t sell out or settle. Don’t go for something that isn’t you. Value who you you’re your personal and professional skills and talents. For the right job, you are the perfect person, just as you are. Go for a job that values who you are, a job that you’ll enjoy. Go for YOUR job. You’ll find it faster and easier.
Then, when you get “your job” versus “a job” you’ll naturally enjoy it more, do better at work, rise faster, and enjoy the process. You’ll want to give your best because it’s something that matters to you. You’ll also be a vital part of the team because it’s not just another job to you. It’s your job. It will expect your best from you and you’ll want to give it. It won’t just be a paycheck. Think of the difference that would make in your life.
Are you feeling inspired? Are you starting to want that new job yet? Do the lists! What do you have to give to your next employer and what do you want?
When my clients get excited about getting their next job, good things start happening because they really go for it. Now it’s your turn…

Are You Open To Your Possibilities?
Someone recently called me Mariposa… which means Butterfly and sounds beautiful in Spanish.
I thought about that… and it fits, yet I realized I hadn’t been using my wings. A part of me forgot that I am no longer a caterpillar and instead of my wings being these beautiful things to lift me and take me to my next destination with ease and beauty… gliding and having fun… they were weighing me down. Like a caterpillar with luggage and the wrong legs to carry it.
Sometimes, when something happens we get off track. Whether that something is personal or professional or something outside of us like the economy or getting laid off, we forget how amazing and beautiful we are, we forget the tools that we have, and we forget how capable and able we are to create the life and experience we want.
Open Up To Your Possibilities!
The first step in my “What Piece of the Puzzle Are You? Five Steps to Your Right Livelihood!” workshop is “Open Up To Possibilities”. I put that step in because people kept telling me their dreams like this… “I’d love to do this job or that, work with this client or that, have this business or that… but …I’m too old, too young, don’t have this or that skill, etc. (you fill in the rest. What’s your but?) And what I know from working with clients over the years is that those buts are not true, they are just fear and resistance…forgetting how much choice and power we have to create our destiny.
So… know you are your amazing self. Now… what is really possible for you. Start that “I’d love to…” leave off the “but” put in an “and… today I will_____(your action step here)_____ because I know I can do it, I do have what it takes, I deserve to have what my heart desires, and the Universe will support me.”
Just like the Mariposa… how must that first flight feel? To have been a caterpillar all ones life, afraid of falling… and then have wings and need to fly. You cannot fly unless you trust your wings, that inner tug inside that says “You are so much more… fly!” That tug within you, that dream of who and how you want to be, is the truth of you. Your wings are already there… use them.
Affirmation: Today I recognize what’s good in me. I know my good and my talent. I take my next bold step knowing that I will be supported… that God and the Universe are on my side. (Vision the ease and joy of flying.)
Go, take your place in the world and be all you are meant to be…

Are You Thinking Like a Winner?
When we think about ourselves or our businesses we can either think about what we want to create and how we’ll do that – valuing what is and adding value to that. Or, think about what we don’t have and what’s wrong.
In the back, or front, of many people’s minds are, “not good enough” thoughts. Whether those thoughts are about their business, their product, or themselves… and of course, that’s on a relative level – you might be making $1 million a year and not be feeling good enough to make or do more. It’s hard to sell your product or service or yourself if you’re feeling and believing that some part of it or you is not good enough to go to that next level.
Have you heard of the story of Bunker Bean? It was a novel written about 100 years ago. The story tells about a man who has low self-esteem and doesn’t do well in life. Then Bunker made a new friend, a medium, whom he believed in. This friend told him that the down part of his life would soon be over, and that he had been Napoleon in a past life. Well, Bunker Bean feeling so powerful and good about himself went from there, with new beliefs about himself, made new choices and bigger actions and became much more successful. Everything in his life changed for the better… he studied Napoleon and imitated him… he also realized that he himself possessed some of those good qualities that Napoleon had possessed.
Bunker went from feeling not good enough, to feeling possibility. He went from thinking about what he didn’t possess within himself, to thinking about what he did. He went from thinking about what he hadn’t done, to thinking what he could do, and finding out how to do it. That’s thinking like a winner.
Today, are you thinking about what you don’t have, what you’ve never done and deciding you can’t or aren’t good enough? Or are you thinking about:
– What you want to do?
– What you need to learn and grow to get there?
– The good, skills, talent and experience you already possess?
– Who could help you – whether in person or reading a book about someone?
– What steps can you take today to move your forward?
It took Bunker Bean having someone tell him that he’d been someone powerful and important in his past. So, what do you need to believe about yourself and what you’re capable of? What if I told you that you, a member of the human race, are related to the most powerful people that are or ever have been, and that you are capable of that greatness too? What if you knew, you have within and available to you what the most successful people in the world have.
If you took the time to read this, it shows you want to move forward and you’re already taking the steps it takes…Fabulous! So, what’s your next step? Go for it!
If you’re next step is to get help and you’re ready to rise up to the next level of success in your life, to have that experience that Bunker Bean had of knowing how great you are and doing even more with your life than you already are, check out my workshops or sign up for a Free Personal Strategy Session with me and find out how coaching with me will help you. My coaching is over the phone, so no matter where you are in the world, if you’re ready to go for that next level of success, I can help you!

You Get Your Story… or The Life You Want.
If you don’t have the life and success that you want, you probably have a story that you tell yourself about why you don’t have it. Maybe it’s about someone in your life and how they are keeping you from what you want. Maybe it’s about your past, your parents or something that happened to you.
First, I’m sorry that something challenging happened to you.
Second, how much of your life, how many opportunities, how much love, how much success are you going to not experience because you are believing your story, carrying it around, using it as your reason to stay stuck and not making a different choice for yourself.
You can have whatever life you want…and…the first thing you need to do is give up your story…blame, excuse, the reason you tell yourself you don’t have what you want. Then realize the story happened in the past and it’s over, whether it was 20 years ago or 5 minutes. Your future, starting this moment can be whatever you want it to be. If it’s not great, it’s because you are not doing what it takes to have the life that you want.
Sound harsh? What’s better… you believing the lie that your past tells you and you not having the life or experiences that you want for months or years…maybe the rest of your life. Or you getting uncomfortable for a bit, realizing that you are the reason your life isn’t what you want it to be… and you having the opportunity to change it.
You are the power in your world. You’re past is over and done. What will you make of today? Stop living the lie… and live your truth and your life.
You are good enough, you are special and beautiful and unique and capable. You can have the life that you want… What is that next level of better for you? What will you do today to move toward it?
